About the Myst Hints Editor
---------------------------
Myst Hints contains a built-in question and answer editor, to help you customize it. Of course, I’m assuming that your intentions are pure, and that you have noticed a glaring omission or misleading or inaccurate information, that you wish to add. If you get titillated by the idea of distributing copies of this software that contain intentionally inaccurate or misleading “clues,” please don’t bother.
Using the Myst Hints Editor
------------------------
You need HyperCard or HyperCard Player 2.1 or later to use the Myst Hints editor. Please note that the Myst Hints stack is designed to be distributed (and used) in a *locked* state, so it relocks itself when it is closed. Myst Hints will NOT function correctly if the stack is opened in its unlocked state.
Invoking the Editor
1. Hold down the Command key and choose Protect Stack...
from the File menu.
A dialog box asks you to type a password.
2. Type “EDITOR” and click OK.
The Myst Hints editor appears.
3. Choose a topic from the black pop-up menu.
4. Choose a question from the white pop-up menu.
To close the Editor, click the Go Back button.
Editing a Question
1. Choose the question you want to change from the white pop-up menu.
2. Choose the Edit This Question… command from the white pop-up menu.
Questions cannot contain Return or comma characters.
3. When you are done, press the Enter key.
Editing Answers
1. While viewing the question, click in the Answers area.
Answers cannot contain double-Returns. Commas are okay, though.
2. When you are done, press the Enter key.
Adding a Question
1. Choose New Card from the Edit menu.
A dialog box shows you where the new card will be placed.
If this placement is not correct, click Cancel.
2. Type the question.
Questions cannot be left blank.
3. Press the Tab key.
4. Type the clues, from most subtle to more direct nudges.
Press the Return key after each hint. Please do not add
whole solutions; try to respect the intelligence of the
player/user, and keep the hints as subtle and friendly as
possible.
5. When you are done, press the Enter key.
Removing a Question
1. Move to the question you want to remove.
2. Choose Delete Card from the Edit menu, or press Command-Delete.
A dialog box asks you to confirm your action.
If you are unsure about deleting this question, click Cancel.
The Internal Database
---------------------
Myst Hints saves the list of hints that have been viewed in a file named, “Myst Hints Preferences” inside the Preferences folder. When you modify questions and answers, this information needs to be rebuilt to reflect your changes. When the file is rebuilt, Myst Hints ‘forgets’ which hints have already been viewed.

However, you may distribute modified copies of this software, provided that include *this* file, unmodified in any way, you credit me as the original author, and you include a list of the modifications that you made as an additional TeachText document, such as “Changes since Version 1.x.” (Don’t give any specific clues away in the documentation, of course!) Also, I would really appreciate it if you send me a copy of the modified stack, or at least a brief note, at one of the FirstClass e-mail addresses below. Thank you!
